Calumet Is My Back Yard (CIMBY)

Classroom-based Service Opportunities for 

CIMBY and Habitat Restoration Projects 

Sand Ridge Nature Center

      Calumet Is My Back Yard (CIMBY) is an environmental education program, which is operated with the collaborative efforts of Chicago Public Schools – Office of Civic Engagement and Service Learning and the Field Museum – Division of Environmental Education, to provide students with experiences in ecological conservation and restoration.  Morgan Park’s stewardship site is Sand Ridge Nature Center, which is located in the South Holland, Illinois.  Activities normally take place outdoors, and proper attire is REQUIRED!  Students must follow the guidelines:

  •  Wear old clothing (long leg pants or jeans), long sleeved top or sweatshirt, and old gym shoes.  NO SHORTS!  NO FLIP-FLOPS or SANDALS!
  • Lunch (i.e., Subway) will be provided.
  • Follow directions given by CIMBY staff from Central Office, Sand Ridge Nature Center and Morgan Park High School while performing service.
  • Wear gloves and safety googles provided by Sand Ridge Nature Center.
  • Stay with assigned service group.  Group will be rotated so all participants will perform the same restoration/conservation activities.

      CIMBY activities are coordinated within the science curriculum, and students must receive permission from activity sponsor(s) to attend trip. Service record of all participants will be checked in advance.

     Permission slips must be submitted to activity sponsor seven (7) school days before each event. Each activity has a strict limit and is subject to CPS’ Guidelines of one adult needed for every ten students in attendance.

CIMBY TRIP DATES WILL BE ANNOUNCED AND SCHEDULED

AT THE  

BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
